Aeration and Seeding After-Service Instructions: How to Care for Your Lawn
To get the most out of your aeration and seeding service, proper post-service care is essential. At ProLawn, we want to help ensure your lawn thrives after the treatment. By following these after-service instructions, you’ll give your new grass the best chance to grow strong and healthy.

Start Watering Immediately
As soon as the service is complete, begin watering your lawn. For optimal results, water lightly and frequently. Virginia Green recommends watering enough to create a light puddle, ideally twice a day. Over the next 21 to 28 days, the soil should remain damp to the touch, ensuring the seeds stay hydrated.

Leave the Clumps Alone
After aeration, you may notice clumps of soil left on the surface. These clumps are beneficial for the seeds and should not be disturbed. The dirt will naturally break down over time, creating ideal seed beds for new growth.

Remove Fallen Leaves Quickly
Fallen leaves can block sunlight and moisture from reaching your grass. If leaves are left on the lawn for more than three days, they can harm your turf. The best way to remove leaves is with a leaf blower. If using a rake, be cautious not to pull up delicate grass seedlings.

Adjust Watering Once Seedlings Grow
Once your grass seedlings reach about 2 inches tall, you can cut back on watering. At this point, watering once a day is sufficient. Continue to ensure the soil stays damp, but avoid overwatering.

Avoid Mowing Too Early
It’s important to let your new grass grow before mowing. While your existing grass may look tall, wait until the new seedlings reach about 4.5 inches in height before mowing. Never mow fescue grass below 3 inches, as keeping it taller helps the roots grow deeper and the turf establish more quickly.

Let Weeds Germinate
During the first few weeks after aeration, it’s more important to focus on grass establishment than weed control. Some winter annual weeds like henbit and chickweed may germinate, which is normal. Avoid using herbicides on your new turf, as they can harm the seedlings. ProLawn will handle weed control with the final application in the program and throughout the spring.

Avoid Re-Planting Seed Immediately
After your service, wait at least 3 weeks before adding more seed. ProLawn’s aeration and seeding process provides enough seed—1,575,000 seeds per 1,000 square feet—to ensure a healthy lawn. Additional seeding too soon can overcrowd the area and inhibit proper growth.

Using Seed Bags for Spot Repairs
If you have thin spots or areas with heavy foot traffic, you can use the five-pound seed bags after 21 days. Gently rake the soil in these areas, being careful not to disturb existing turf. Lightly apply the seed and continue to water as directed.

Be Patient with Germination
Germination takes time, and it can take up to 21 days or more for your seeds to sprout. Do not stop watering during this period, as the seedlings are vulnerable to drying out. We are providing the necessary fertilizers to support healthy seed growth through our regular lawn care applications.
Conclusion
The steps you take after your aeration and seeding service are crucial to ensuring that your lawn grows strong and healthy. By following these after-service instructions, you’ll support the new grass in establishing deep roots and a vibrant, lush appearance. We appreciate your business and look forward to helping you maintain a beautiful lawn!
