CDC provides estimate of Americans diagnosed with Lyme disease each year
Preliminary estimates released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that the number of Americans diagnosed with Lyme disease each year is over 600,000.
If Lyme disease is not diagnosed and treated early, the spirochetes can spread and may go into hiding in different parts of the body. Weeks, months or even years later, your entire family may develop problems with the brain and nervous system, muscles and joints, heart and circulation, digestion, reproductive system, and skin. Symptoms may disappear even without treatment and different symptoms may appear at different times.
This is a serious problem and spreading into Northern Virginia the past 10 years. Almost every county of Virginia is now reporting Lyme disease.
A misconception we hear from people is…
“I have no deer on my property, therefore I must not have any ticks.” Wrong! Chipmunks, mice (particularly the nocturnal white footed mouse) birds, rabbits, squirrels, deer, wild turkey, etc., are all carriers of ticks. If any of these animals frequent your yard or surrounding areas, you are at high risk.
The Powassan Virus
Ticks in the Northeast have been found to carry a rare, potentially life-threatening, virus, even worse than Lyme disease and the virus may spread South.
Doctors have warned that the “Powassan Virus” is a rare tick-borne illness and could be serious, and has no treatment or cure. ”The doctor just has to support you during that acute illness and hope that you survive,” said Dr. Daniel Cameron of the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society. “You can get seizures, high fevers, and stiff neck. It comes on so suddenly,” he said.
The doctor said that if someone is bitten by an infected tick, they can get the virus within a matter of minutes. While the symptoms are similar to Lyme disease, they are far more severe.
Does your family have a dog…then you may have fleas in your lawn and house.
Adult fleas spend most of their time on an animal, but flea eggs, larvae, and pupae are most often found in the pet’s environment – especially in carpeting, bedding, and under furniture edges. For every flea that you see on your pet, there are likely to be hundreds of eggs and larvae in your home and yard. Therefore, a truly effective flea control program always includes treating the environment as well as treating your pet. Call us today for the essential steps for a successful flea control program.
